Introduction

Primavera P6 is one of the most robust and widely used software tools in project management worldwide. Developed by Oracle, this tool allows large projects to be planned, scheduled and controlled efficiently.

While MS Project uses a structure based on independent files, Primavera P6 uses a database-based approach. Project information is stored in a relational database. Thanks to its database structure, Primavera P6 is highly scalable and can manage very large and complex projects with multiple interdependencies.

Types of databases in Primavera P6:

  • P6 Pro Standalone (SQLite)
  • Microsoft SQL Server/SQL Express
  • Oracle
  • P6 Pro cloud connect

1. P6 Pro Standalone (SQLite)

SQLite is the default database for P6 Professional in standalone, offline mode. The main characteristics of SQLite are:

  • It is a C-language library that implements a small, fast, self-contained and highly reliable SQL database engine.
  • SQLite is a process library that does not need a server or configuration.
  • Its code is in the public domain, allowing free use for both commercial and private purposes.
  • SQLite reads and writes directly to ordinary disk files, creating a complete SQL database, including tables, indexes, views and triggers, in a single file. This means backups can be made simply by copying and pasting the file or by sharing the database through email.

Advantages of SQLite:

  • Simplified installation: It does not require a separate installation of database management software, or DBMS, because SQLite is embedded in the P6 Professional application.
  • Offline system: It allows Primavera to be used in situations without an internet connection.
  • Ease of sharing: Data is stored in a single file on the client disk, which makes it easy to share the complete database.
  • Scalability: The SQLite database size can grow as required, limited only by available disk space and the limitations of the underlying file system.

Disadvantages of SQLite:

  • Usage limitations: P6 Professional databases with SQLite cannot be used in a workgroup environment.
  • Unsupported functionality: Certain advanced functions are not available.

2. Microsoft SQL Server/SQL Express

Because of the limitations of a SQLite database, it may be necessary to store and manage data using a SQL Server database. Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system developed by Microsoft that offers high performance, scalability and security.

SQL Express, on the other hand, is a free and lighter edition of Microsoft SQL Server. It is designed for smaller applications.

Advantages of using SQL Server/SQL Express with Primavera P6:

  • Scalability: SQL Server is suitable for large-scale or long-term projects. It is capable of handling large amounts of data and a large number of concurrent users.
  • Security: SQL Server offers a high level of security, including user authentication, data encryption and access control.
  • Collaboration: SQL Server allows several users to access and work with project data at the same time, facilitating collaboration.
  • Integration: SQL Server can be integrated with other project management and business tools such as Excel and Power BI, facilitating report generation and data analysis.

Implementation of SQL Server how to set up a sql server database for primavera p6 professional/SQL Express with Primavera P6:

  • Installation and configuration of SQL Server or SQL Express from the Microsoft website.
  • Database configuration for Primavera P6 using SQL Server Management Studio, or SSMS.
  • Integration with Primavera P6 by providing the details required to connect to the database.

3. Oracle

The Oracle database provides a robust infrastructure for managing and storing the data of any company. The main characteristics of the Oracle Database are:

  1. Multi-user and multi-thread architecture to handle multiple users and multiple processes.
  2. Real Application Clusters, or RAC, allows a database to run on multiple servers at the same time, providing high availability and scalability.
  3. Data Guard ensures business continuity by providing high-availability and disaster-recovery solutions.
  4. Advanced encryption.
  5. Management of large data volumes.
  6. Pluggable Databases, or PDBs, allows databases to be created within a single container instance.

Comparison with Microsoft SQL Server:

  • The Oracle database offers higher performance and scalability than SQL Server.
  • Oracle offers more robust and easier-to-manage high availability and uninterrupted disaster recovery.
  • It is perfectly integrated with Primavera P6 and other Oracle tools such as Oracle BI and Oracle Cloud, while SQL Server is better integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem, including tools such as Power BI, Excel and Azure.
  • Oracle generally has a higher cost because of its advanced features and its capacity to handle mission-critical environments.

4. P6 Pro cloud connect

P6 Pro Cloud Connect is an integration that allows users to connect to an Oracle cloud database through the Primavera P6 Professional desktop client. This solution facilitates access to project data stored in the cloud, offering the flexibility and scalability of cloud solutions together with the power and functionality of the P6 Professional desktop client. The main characteristics of P6 Pro Cloud Connect are:

  1. Remote and multi-user access.
  2. Improved security.
  3. Scalability and flexibility. The cloud solution allows organisations to scale their database resources according to their needs, without investing in additional hardware or IT infrastructure.
  4. Simplified updates and maintenance.
  5. Simple integration.
